Pony's name: Nightingale Pony's age: Teenage (14 years) Type of pony or animal: Zebracorn pony Pony's cutie mark and special talent: A cloud and moon surrounded by stars; she's good at interpreting dreams Employment: N/a Current city: Canterlot
Appearance: Nightingale's rather colorful for a zebra: her base color is white, and faded forest green stripes run all along her legs, body, and face. Her mane and tail are short, which is common for most zebra ponies, and they are both a combination of deep blue and and a rich violet. Her eyes are big and a more vibrant navy than her mane, and are all ways full of curiosity and excitement. As Nightingale's only a teenage filly, she's shorter than most adult or young ponies, but taller than all the small fillies and colts. On her hind rests her cutie mark, a beautiful collage of stars surrounding a cloud with a moon, and it contains the same color as the colors of her stripes and her mane. The only thing that makes Nightingale not an ordinary zebra, however, is the fact that she has a white horn on the top of her head; she's a zebracorn.
Personality Nightingale can easily described as an awkward and happy-go-lucky kind of mare. She's always bubbly, cheerful, and hyperactive when she feels comfortable enough to let her cheery side flow through the little barrier that she puts up around herself. Now, this isn't a "protective" barrier that she's created, or anything of the sort because "she's been hurt so many times and doesn't trust anyone". No, it's because little Nightingale can get so awkward in some social situations. If she feels like she might do something "odd" or foolish at a certain time or place, she'll tend to steer away from the masses because she's fearful of making a fool of herself with her silliness. Nightingale will often trip up on her words when she realizes that she's about to say something "stupid", and will instantly clam up--even in mid-sentence, and especially when she's about to say something she doesn't want other ponies to hear.
Nightingale's still trying to find out who she is, in a way, and she's still trying to learn how to be comfortable with herself and her talent, which she's only figured out recently. She loves making ponies laugh, however--especially her friends--and will often act silly or say stupid things in order to get a chuckle out of them. It's sometimes difficult to tell when her goofiness is all an act, though, so it's hard to take her seriously sometimes. She's also pretty naive and gullible, and still acts like she's a filly. As her talent is dream interpreting, I guess in a way you could say that she's "psychic", but that's not the kind of life or job that she wants to live. Nightingale prefers to blend in with the masses, as she's stood out for almost her entire lifetime. She doesn't think many would be open to what she can do, and she's rather insecure about her ability and you'll never come across Nightingale ever openly professing what she can do to a crowd, or even to a friend, until she feels comfortable enough to do so. What she fears even more than being shunned, per say, is ridicule, as all Nightingale wants to be is accepted by others around her. Because of this insecurity it's hard for her to trust other ponies, but eventually she opens up.
As Nightingale is very perceptive and observant, its easy for her to analyze problems and to easily find a solution. Actually, she adores reading poems and philosophical texts because she loves finding out the meanings behind words and to interpret their meaning, which makes sense because of her talent. Even though she can be silly from time to time, Nightingale is down to earth and logical, and won't ever make absurd presumptions about an ordeal without having all of the facts, as she's learned from past experiences what doing something like that can do. She tries to be as unbiased as possible, though it's hard for her not to pass judgement on somepony when she knows that they did is wrong or something that would normally be frowned upon. While she might understand why a pony might have done such a thing, that doesn't mean that she won't look down on that individual with some disdain, as her morals are very important to her. However, she doesn't want to conform to the socially accepted way of morality, despite her wanting to fit in appearance-wise. She wants to believe those things because she believes in them, not because it's a socially accepted belief. But because Nightingale is constantly bombarded by ideas that counter each other in everyday life, it's hard for her to figure out what she wants to believe in.
Background Nightingale doesn't really know where she's from. She remembers living a luxurious life in Canterlot with her mother, which she actually recalls the most considering she's lived most of her life there, but she also remembers living in a wild, exotic place far from Equestria, away from civilization with her father for a short period of time. There she remembers being the happiest. But she has very vague memories of that faraway place, so the memories almost seems dream-like, or as if she made them up and aren't real memories at all.
As Nightingale is a zebracorn, it only makes sense that her parents were both a zebra and a unicorn: her father, Mica, being the zebra and her mother, Aurora Beam, being the unicorn. Her parents had met during the summer, when her mother and her family had left Canterlot for a vacation. Her father, wanting to be the friendly native that he was to the country, helped Aurora Beam find her way home one day when she got lost, and well, that marked the beginning of their summer romance. It was like most summer romances, as well, and it happened without the knowledge of her parents. When Aurora Beam had to leave, she still kept in contact with Mica, writing letters to him every chance she got. In one of those letters she informed him that she was pregnant with Nightingale, and promised that she'd visit him as soon as she left her parents and was on her own with her. Well, eventually Aurora's parents found out and didn't approve of her eloping with a zebra, and kicked her out as punishment. When she alerted Mica of the incident, he sent a boat to take them to the island where he lived, and Aurora had Nightingale on that island.
Nightingale loved the island. She loved playing in the water, running with sand crunching beneath her hooves, and admiring the diverse wildlife and plants that bloomed such beautiful flowers and bore such delicious fruits. She'd accepted the fact that she was a zebracorn, and that her mother and father were two different kinds of ponies; though she didn't know that things could be different. She played with the other zebra fillies and colts just fine, and though some made comments about the horn on top of her head, they accepted her as part of the herd just fine. This was when she was a very young filly, however, and because of this these memories seem like a dream. Eventually, her mother started to miss home. Rather than making his love stay, Mica understood and let her leave him, and they promised to meet at least once a year--but this never happened. The two eventually lost contact when Mica stopped replying to her letters, which gave her the impression that maybe he had met another zebra mare. Because of this, Aurora became very strict with Nightingale, because she didn't want her daughter to make the same mistake she did.
Nightingale grew up dreading Canterlot. She hated how everypony cared too much about what everypony else was doing. She hated how there were standards that she was afraid she didn't meet up to. In her class, she was the only one who hadn't obtained her cutie mark, which made her stand out even more than her zebra stripes and short mane already did. When Aurora had thought that she had gone to school, she had actually went somewhere else and stayed their until school had let out. When Nightingale was called on during class, she grew nervous and was afraid to speak out of fear of saying something wrong, and crunched under the pressure of her classmates staring at her expectantly, waiting for an answer. She could recall other fillies and colts snickering in the back of the room. Oh how she missed the island!
Eventually Nightingale had made a friend during one day in her art class when her teacher had assigned a partner assignment, and Nightingale was overjoyed that someone was willing to talk to her and be kind. This pony, named Smile Shine, was known to be one of the kindest fillies in Canterlot, and she welcomed Nightingale with open hooves. Nightingale aspired to be like Smile Shine, and looked up to her. As the months went on, they became best friends. Smile Shine defended Nightingale whenever anyone teased her, and Nightingale grew happier. Even when foal school was over for the both of them, they still stayed friends.
During one night, Nightingale received a call from Smile Shine telling her about a terrible dream she had. Instantly, Nightingale felt as if she knew what the dream was about. She told her to describe the dream to her, and Smile Shine refused to, telling her that it was too scary to relay back to her, and Nightingale told her she would come over in the morning. Later on, Nightingale came over and Smile Shine told her the dream: it was about two timberwolves fighting, with a crying pup in the backround running away from the fighting. Immediately her horn started to glow, and Nightingale asked, "Your parents have been fighting, haven't they? Well... it's about that. And you're scared about what will happen. I'm not sure what they're fighting over... maybe it's money? Because there was a meat slab that you had forgotten about that was between the two timberwolves." And Smile Shine was stunned by how quickly her friend had gathered that information, and when she asked how Nightingale responded by saying that it all just came to her when her horn glowed. Just then, Nightingale obtained her cutie mark.
Since that moment, she's still lived in Canterlot despite her hatred of the city, but because he doesn't want to leave her mother alone she stays, and she also doesn't want to leave her best friend, Smile Shine.
Anything else you'd like to add: The easiest way for her so far to interpret dreams is if the pony draws the dream in question. She'll then put her horn to the picture, which will then tell her what the dream means. While she figures it would be just as easy for her to look at the dream in the pony's mind, she feels like that would be too invasive.
