Whiplash made a face at the violet-maned pony.
"Whatever. I can do a million things you can't do, and I can walk on clouds," he argued. "That makes me the cool one."
He glided in the air along on his back with his hooves behind his head in a pose of relaxation, as if it proved his point somehow to look chill while proclaiming his coolness.

Blizzard yawned, tapping her hoof against her mouth to make a big display of it. Goading the Wonderbolt was way more fun than she'd expected to have that afternoon, even if she'd planned a day of hopping on clouds.
Blizzard, however, was also egocentric and was having a hard time not responding to his obvious challenges to her personal skills. She tried to keep calm, at least, when she responded.
"Oh yeah? Well, I guess you're a million times better at looking stupid than I am," she said, forcing herself to yawn again so that it would seem like she was just nonchalantly insulting him rather than issuing any sort of challenge.

Whiplash let this insult glide off him along with the wind he flew through. Clearly, this pony didn't know handsomeness and good showmanship when she saw it.
"If I wanted to, that would be one thing I could do a million times better than you, along with everything else that I can also do," he said, pausing to think about what he'd just said, before deciding that, in some convoluted way, it made sense. "Yeah. That's right."
He grinned. "Except be totally pretty. That's something that you're doing way better than me. How is it that I've never met you before, anyway? I come down to the big P all the time."

If he ever landed on her level, Blizzard was going to kick the stallion in the face. Maybe, if she did that, it would reach his brain and he would get a little bit of the stupid knocked out of him. He was so stupid, though, that it probably wouldn't have made a difference.
"No," she said, lifting herself to her feet. She lowered her head and glared at him. "You can't just tell me that you're better than me at everything and then call me pretty. I'm not a poster."

Whiplash shrugged mid-air, still hovering around her head like a hovering mchoverpants.
"Fine," he said with a wave of his hoof. "I'll be prettiest then, too." He batted his eyelashes at her.

Blizzard would have reared up and flailed at him, but she did intend to eventually ask him to bring her to land, so she couldn't make an active effort to injure him. If he came closer before she asked, then it would be his own damn fault, but for now, she would be a nice pony.
"You weren't even in the running for prettiest," she said, tossing her mane. "You probably suck at everything, too. I'll bet you carrying me before was just a fluke. You probably couldn't get me back to the ground."

Whiplash chuckled. He liked this pony; she was feisty and fun to banter with, though a bit too angry for his tastes. Regardless, he grinned.
"You know what? You're totally right," he said, slowly lowering himself in the air until he was below the cloud. "My secret plan was to strand you up there forever. See ya later, beautifillie." He began gliding down with a smirk on his face.

Blizzard sort of went "akjshdgkjfg" and scooted over until she could see below the cloud. What was he doing? He wasn't supposed to be able to figure out what she was trying to do. He was supposed to keep being stupid and then when he brought her off the cloud, he wouldn't think it was because she needed it, but because he'd wanted to show off.
"Hey!" she called, because she didn't really have a choice. She could have stayed on the cloud and floated into the main part of Cloudsdale, but then she'd have to explain herself to whatever Pegasus she found first and then her secret would be out and her tree would be private no longer.

Whiplash stayed just beneath the cloud, so that she couldn't see where he was. Then, he popped his head up through the cottony puff of white and raised an eyebrow at her.
"What, did you miss me already? I didn't even leave all the way yet," he said.

Blizzard screamed and skittered as backwards as she could without falling, rearing to catch her balance. She had to push down the urge to step on his head and push him back through the clouds as payback for scaring her and, instead, fell back on her best talent--yelling.
"What the hell?!" She glared at him. "Stop trying to make me fall."

Whiplash pouted at her, giving her his best puppy eyes look.
"Awwww," he said, "but you already gypped me out of my last rescue, and I haven't had proper diving practice in sooo long."

She scowled. "Fine. I'll jump to the tree and you can catch me and bring me to the ground if I fall."
It was obvious that she wouldn't make it and she knew it. She pointed toward the tree, which was now about thirty feet away. She had no intentions of reaching it, but at least then she'd get to "fly" again.

Whiplash paused. He hadn't actually been expecting her to do anything rash like actually jump off of the cloud, but she seemed fairly confident that she could do it, and he knew he could probably catch her if she misjudged. Nonetheless, it was a pretty far distance, and he wasn't sure he liked the idea of her actually putting her life in danger just because of him.
"Well, wait a second," he said. "You could stay up here and talk to me some more." He popped up all the way through the cloud, patting down the space where the hole had been so that he could sit on it across from her. "I'm pretty good company, I'm told."

She wanted to say yes, if only to stay in the cloud some more, but then she would have to set up another situation in which it would make sense for him to bring her to the ground without her having asked for any actual help. If she stayed, she might even have to actually ask him, and that was not cool with her.
But she never got to stay in the clouds--at least, not without her parents or her sister around. Whenever she managed to cloud hop, she always had to keep a careful watch and make sure that her cloud didn't do exactly what this cloud had done and float away from her tree. Here, she had a Pegasus who was perfectly willing to ferry her up and down.
With a sigh, she plopped back down onto the cloud, folding her hooves and resting her head on them.
"I'm Blizzard," she said, since she couldn't think of anything else to say. It was rare that she actually introduced herself, but she figured that she might as well.

It hadn't occurred to Whiplash that he hadn't found out her name yet, but as soon as she introduced herself, he realized that it was weird that he hadn't asked. Normally, that was the first thing he asked after calling a pony Heaven Hooves, in case he ran out of cute nicknames. Not that that ever happened, but someday, it could, and he wanted to be ready for that unlikely day.
"Blizzard," he repeated. "No wonder you're so cool." He winked at her, and then tossed his mane and looked towards the sun so that it purposefully glinted its fiery red in the light. "They call me Whiplash."
That was, of course, because Whiplash was the name he was given at birth, but regardless, that was what they called him, and he was on an endless quest to be consistently awesome.
